Notes: Places followed by an asterisk () can be found on the map* of Aleksander Topolski's journey (1939-1942) through Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Siberia, and Central Asia. It is the same map that is printed at the front of Without Vodka. The page numbers in this index refer to the American edition of Without Vodka published in 2001 by Steerforth Press then in South Royalton, Vemont. The Canadian edition, published by McArthur & Co. of Toronto in the year 2000, has similar pagination but you may have to look forward or backward a page or two to find the place you’re seeking. This index features the pre-war names of places. These names were in current use in 1939-42, the time covered by Topolski’s book. After World War II many boundaries were shifted, but for the purposes of this index the locations noted are generally in accordance with the 1939 borders. Places which were in Poland in 1939 are spelled in the Polish way, even though, for example, the city formerly in Poland and then known as Lwow, is now in the Ukraine and known as Lviv (Lvov in Russian). Many cities and towns which were renamed by the Soviets after the Russian revolution against the tsar have reverted to their tsarist names. Thus Sverdlovsk (the name used in this book) is now known as Ekaterinburg, Leningrad is once again known as St. Petersburg., and Kuibyshev as Samara. Where there are English forms for well known places (eg Warsaw, Moscow, Cracow), these have been preferred. The Oxford English Reference Dictionary (1995) has proved useful in rendering into the Roman alphabet names written in Cyrillic.
